Bereavement
“We do not want you to be unaware, brothers [and sisters], about those who have fallen asleep, so that you may not grieve like the rest, who have no hope.” (1 Thes. 4:13)
In writing to the Christians at Thessalonika, St. Paul doesn’t suggest that grief is somehow out of place if a faithful believer has lost a loved one. But he does insist that for those who believe, our mourning for loved ones who have died should never be lacking in hope—the hope that comes from our faith in the future resurrection of the dead. Our Bereavement Support Group provides an opportunity for adults who have recently suffered the loss of a loved on to meet others who share their experience. It provides a safe, informal, healing environment where grieving individuals can listen to one another, share their own experiences, and learn together. Support group meetings are usually offered twice a year, each lasting for several weeks. Trained facilitators guide the conversation, offering their own input and feedback. The sessions are open to anyone who has suffered a loss at least three months prior to the start of the group.
